I’m a Digital Content Creator, 3D Animator, and Virtual Production Designer. I’ve spent my career editing, animating and compositing for some of the largest international corporations on the planet. This blog is my outlet to talk about my career experience, and my professional efforts. My ultimate goal is to create content that can be valuable for others pursuing the same field.
Filmmaking Journey
Since Elementery school I’ve considered myself a filmmaker. I used to make short films with action figures and a Sony HandiCam. During high school I took a video class, and my life changed. I started making short films on a regular basis, and made my first feature film in 2001.
I began working in corporate video as a cinematographer and editor. With each project, I pushed myself to learn more about post-production, both analog and non-linear editing. I started with VCRs and a character generator for titles, then moved on to Media100 and later FCP. I also discovered the benefits of using digital graphics to enhance my videos, and learned motion design with software like After Effects.
This passion for post led me to the world of 3D. Using Cinema4D and Blender, I learned to model hard and soft surfaces, generate real world dynamics, advanced materials and lighting. I found by keeping current with the trends I became more marketable and was often selected for the more interesting projects at work.
Exploring Virtual Production
Since 2021 I’ve been focusing on Unreal Engine. This app allows a level of flexibility previously unavailable. I leaned on my Computer Science education to engineer Virtual Production solutions. I’m currently developing custom virtual sets in 3D modeling apps, importing into unreal for real-time in-camera visual effects (ICVFX) on GreenScreen and LED Volumes. Through a few years of experimenting I’ve become comfortable creating unique VP solutions for clients. This work has been both fulfilling and challenging, and combines my two professional passions, video production and 3D animation.
Virtual Production is clearly the future of the video industry, and I feel blessed that I’ve been able to focus my career towards these efforts over the last few years. One thing about VP, is that there are no rules! As an emerging approach, there is no clearly defined road map. Based on my research and ingenuity I’ve developed workflows and approaches that work for me and the tools I have available to me.
Over the coming weeks, months, and years, I’ll blog my personal and professional efforts in the world of ICVFX, VP, and 3D! I’ll share details of personal and professional projects, share shortcuts, case studies, industry insights and create tutorials. My ultimate goal is to share my knowledge with others, that I might provide some useful insight in pursuit of this new technology. I’m always happy to talk shop and find future collaborators!
Cheers!
