Bringing vector graphics from Adobe Illustrator into Blender can be a game-changer, especially for motion designers and 3D artists who need to work with clean, scalable graphics. In this quick tutorial, I’ll show you how to import an Illustrator logo into Blender and extrude all curves at once—saving you time and effort!
Step 1: Export Your Illustrator Logo as an SVG
Blender doesn’t support native .AI files, so you’ll need to convert your Illustrator file to SVG format before importing it.
- Open your logo in Adobe Illustrator.
- Go to File > Save As or File > Export.
- Choose SVG as the file format.
- In the SVG options, ensure that ‘Responsive’ is unchecked and the format is set to SVG 1.1.
- Click Save.
This ensures that Blender correctly reads the paths as curves.
Step 2: Import the SVG File into Blender
Now that you have an SVG file, let’s bring it into Blender:
- Open Blender and switch to the Layout workspace.
- Go to File > Import > Scalable Vector Graphics (.svg).
- Select your exported SVG file and click Import.
- Your logo will appear as a flat curve object in Blender.
Tip: If you don’t see it, zoom in or check the Outliner to ensure it was imported correctly.
Step 3: Convert to a Mesh & Extrude
Now that your logo is in Blender, it’s time to extrude it into 3D!
- Select the imported SVG object.
- In the Object Data Properties panel, navigate to the Geometry section.
- Under Extrude, increase the value to add depth to your logo.
- Adjust the Bevel Depth if you want smooth edges.
Bonus: To convert the logo to a mesh for further editing, select it, press Alt + C, and choose Convert to Mesh.
Final Touches: Materials & Lighting
To make your logo stand out:
- Add a material by going to the Material Properties panel.
- Use an HDRI environment or custom lights to enhance the look.
- Apply subdivision smoothing if needed.
